I am so excited about We Day UK! It will be the very first We Day event outside of North America. I’ve been hearing that young people all over the United Kingdom are have been creating change in their local communities and globally and this Friday, March 7th, 12,000 of them will fill Wembley Arena to celebrate.
Sir Richard Branson and his daughter Holly Branson attended and spoke at We Day Vancouver in 2012, they had the best time and had never experienced anything like it before. They traveled to Kenya and India on a Me to We trip to meet all the kids, the Massai Mamas and to be part of Free The Children’s Adopt A Village initiatives! Holly wanted everyone in the UK to have a chance to get motivated and inspired by amazing speakers and energy that she felt at We Day and with Me to We. She was so determined to bring We Day home to the United Kingdom and on Friday, it will happen.
So, who will be at We Day UK? Who am I excited about? Ever since September 2013, I have spoken at We Day across Canada (and a few in the US) and it has been my honour to share Malala’s story. At this very special We Day, Malala will take stage and will be sharing message and her story in her own words. This will be a huge moment and even though it will be 4:30am here at home when We Day starts in London, my parents and I have plans to get up and watch the live streaming.
Who else? Prince Harry. Yes, that Prince Harry. His mother, Princess Diana, died when he was only 12 years old. She was known for her passion and charitable involvement raising money and awareness for many things, especially HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry says that he has “a bit of his mother in him.” When he was 22 years old, he founded Sentebale, an organization dedicated to helping children and people suffering from HIV/AIDS, poverty and hunger in Africa. Prince Harry has participated in building orphanages, schools, blind schools and refugees for young mothers – what an awesome guy! Something he said when he was in Africa really stood out to me, “This is my side that no one gets to see, I’m not going to take a camera crew everywhere I go.” He goes on to explain that when he is working in the communities in Africa, he is not a Prince – he is just Harry and there to help. To learn more about Sentebale, visit their website and please watch this short video of Prince Harry doing good in Africa.
And…who else? Al Gore, former US Vice President and “eco warrior”. When his commitment as Vice President was over, he followed his passion and became an environmental activist, authour and documentary producer. He spoke at We Day in 2010 and in 2012, and this will be his 3rd We Day. I have seen him speak before and I know that he will motivate and inspire many young people who share his passion for the environment. My favourite quote from him is “The will to act is a renewable resource”.
Musical performers? Yes, there will be music, of course! Jennifer Hudson, Ellie Goulding, Dizze Rascal and my friends The Tenors.
I am so excited to watch We Day UK on Friday. If you want to join me and get up in the middle of the night, it will be streamed live on March 7th starting at 9:30 a.m (UK Time) that’s 4:30 am here. You can watch it as it happens at www.aol.co.uk.
I wish my friends at Free The Children and We Day – Lina, Jill, Leah, Dalal, Angie, Stephanie, Lauren, Angie, Karen, Cassandra, Cameron, David and Jackie and everyone – who is going to the UK good luck and have an amazing time! I also want to wish Craig Kielburger, Marc Kielburger, Spencer West and Molly Burke who are speaking on Friday, an awesome time!
