We Create Change: The results and saying goodbye to the penny

February 4, 2013 By callmehannah Leave a Comment

In November, I launched Free The Children’s We Create Change penny drive at my school and another school in my neighborhood! I made presentations at assemblies to explain what We Create Change is all about.

Free The Children organized the biggest penny drive in Canadian history because the penny is being discontinued. $25 dollars in pennies will provide clean water for 1 child for life.

People get very sick because they don’t have clean water. They are drinking dirty water that has many bad chemicals. Many people drink the water they have and get very sick and sometimes even die. In Canada, we are lucky to have clean  and we don’t worry about our safety or if there will be enough water for us. But in places like Kenya, Mdagascar and Uganda people have to walk miles  to get not just water – but dirty water. This is not fair.

Anybody can do this, we can do this globally. Imagine if every single person would donate pennies to a bank or wherever there is a drive, the world would be so different, maybe not for us but for them. What’s $25 dollars anyway? A pizza, a DVD or a video game. Now that stores aren’t allowing pennies now there’s somewhere to use them for good.  I told the schools that the water would be going to someone that needs it. Our pennies can make a life changing impact all around the world. I also asked the students to find as many pennies as they could and bring them to school. I was so excited to see how many pennies we would end up with and how many people get clean water for their whole life. My friends, my principal, my parents and I counted ALL the pennies.

Combined, both schools got 97,500 pennies!

That’s the equal to in weight of 15 of me!

In weight, that’s the size of 34 of my dog Indigo.

It’s the weight of 2 baby elephants!

If all the pennies were stacked one on top of the other, it would be almost 500 feet tall.

That is as tall as a skyscraper.

But most importantly, 35 people get clean water for life! I am so proud with what the two schools did.

Today’s the day Canadians say goodbye to the penny because they’re phasing them out. They aren’t making them anymore.  RBC banks nationwide are collecting pennies for Free The Children to continue with We Create Change.  So keep bringing those pennies! Every person, every penny creates change.

Thank you the kids who participated in the penny drive and thank to all the teachers and my principal for being so enthusiastic and supportive for this.
