Dear Educators,
I use the term “educators’ because I want to say something to everyone who works in
our schools to make them safe, inclusive and welcoming. This letter is to our teachers
and Principal for sure, but it is also for the caretakers, secretaries, superintendants,
educational assistants, and volunteers.
You probably do not hear these two words enough and you should hear them more
often. So, on behalf of all of the students you have inspired, encouraged and supported,
THANK YOU. Thank you for the extra help at lunch and after school, for making learning
fun and meaningful, for supervising our clubs and teams, for making our classrooms and
schools safe places and for so, so much more.
When school is a place where we can learn and discover who we are and can be,
change happens. When we learn about the world, we begin to understand our place in it.
Thank you for being willing to talk about issues that matter to us, the students. It’s not
easy to talk about things that make people uncomfortable. But sometimes, through that
conversation, there’s one person in the class who has found their spark. That is how we
create change.
Thank you for adapting to the many and fast changing technologies of our generation
and using them in the classroom.
A VERY special thank you to those of you who support those students like me. I know
that it creates more work for you when we miss a class or a day or even a week to
pursue our passion whether that is sports, arts, or activism. I am so, so grateful for all
that you do to make sure I succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Thank you for what you do inside and outside your regularly scheduled class time. We
appreciate the time, energy and care that you give to the extracurricular activities from
student council, to social action clubs, talent show.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to come together and giving us a sense of
belonging and purpose. When we can join together with other like minded students like
minded things that matter to us, we feel good, not only about ourselves, but our
community.
When school is a place where we can learn and discover who we are and can be,
change happens. When we learn about the world, we begin to understand our place in it.
I hope that we inspire you as much as you inspire us.
Thank you,
Hannah and the students you’ve inspired
