Every 4 years there are 29 days instead of 28 days in February and we have an extra day. I’ve been working with Microsoft Canada this month on a project called #My24Hrs and it’s all about what we can do in a day and how we can do great things daily.
I am one of 6 storytellers from across Canada that have been sharing how we are empowered by our community and by technology to take action and make a difference. The whole month has been building to today – the extra 24 hours we get today and how we can use them to do something positive. We were each asked to share what we are going to do with our extra day.
I am doing 24 acts of kindness in 24 hours.
- Compliment someone that could use some cheering up.
- High-five people along with saying “Hi, have a great day!”
- Have lunch with the community/special needs class.
- Write a thank you card to my teacher who spends a lot of time to run an extra curricular activities.
- Volunteer time during recess to play with the younger kids.
- Hold the outside door open.
- Buy Snickers bar for my Mom (she loves them!) and write a letter for her.
- Write a kind post-it notes and leave them in unexpected places.
- Help someone with homework or a project.
- Gather together some extra pencils and give them to your teacher to hand to students who need one.
- Get together non-perishable food items to bring to food bank.
- Share something inspirational on social media! #QOTD
- Offer to help neighbours take out garbage (Tuesday is Garbage Day in our neighbourhood).
- Gather blankets, sheets and towels to give to the humane society.
- Help clean classroom at the end of the day.
- Organize your friends to do a schoolyard cleanup.
- Smile at 10 people. It makes everyone’s day a lot brighter!
- Share my Kindraising Spotify playlist with inspirational and uplifting tracks.
- Help a teacher at recess.
- Make dinner for mom.
- Be a Senpai at karate.
- Help clean dishes after dinner.
- Call up a family member that I haven’t talked to in a while.
- Let someone go in front of you in line – it doesn’t matter where.
- BONUS! Tonight, The Documentary Channel in the US, and CBC Documentary Channel will be showing He Named Me Malala. She’s inspired me with her passion, strength and perseverance. I can’t think of a better way to end this day and watching this again.
I got started last night because I had a few things to prepare for:
I’ll be sharing throughout the day on social media using the hashtag #My24Hrs and so will the other storytellers. You can also follow along on my Twitter, @ThatHannahAlper, and Microsoft Education’s Twitter, @MicrosoftEDU. I challenge you to share what you are doing with your extra day to make someone else’s a little bit better.
